One of the things that I have struggled with the most in my life is a low self-confidence. I used to be quite the perfectionist (I’m in recovery now;). Perfectionism can create quite a bit of negative self-talk, which retrains your subconscious to constantly pick out the negative things about yourself. As a result, it can completely destroy your self-confidence and self-esteem. After all, how can you feel good about yourself if you are regularly pointing out all the ways in which you aren’t good enough?

The truth is, we can’t change this habit of picking ourselves apart or even feeling not good enough in one day. But…the good news is that we can┬áchange it over time. Like many of the tips I give you, the solution to this problem is all about consistent baby steps.

For the next 21 days, I challenge you to write in a journal (or notebook–whatever you prefer) three things that you value about yourself. They can be anything and everything–big or small. Here are some examples of things I value about myself to get you thinking:

1. I am a life-long learner and love to share what I learn with others so they can change their lives too.
2. I am willing to be vulnerable…especially when I know it will help someone else (even when it feels extremely uncomfortable to me).
3. I am a natural leader and do a really great job creating a safe space and establishing community.

These three things you value don’t have to be so deep either. After all, you’re going to be doing this for 21 days and will be coming up with at least 63 things you value about yourself. You can say that you value your big beautiful blue eyes or your amazing smile or your great sense of humor…whatever floats your boat.

If you are having a hard time thinking of things to add to your value list, think about what compliments you receive regularly (even the ones you tend to discount). The point of this exercise is to get you focusing on what you DO┬álike about yourself. This will retrain your subconscious to shift from self-criticism to self-Love over time. It may not be the overnight shift you are looking for…but I promise you, it will produce results if you are consistent with it!

  1. I found out about you but I was getting pictures to put on my phone from the Quotiful website.
    I have recently moved to A Rockwall Texas from Redlands California but I keep in contact with my closest girlfriend in California, Denise. She and I are both recovered alcoholics in Alcoholics Anonymous. She has been sober for six years and I have been sober for years. We are both very positive people but we love to improve in anyway we can.
    So, we are going to take your 21 day challenge and begin writing three things good about ourselves personally (and 1 good thing about our friend too!) on a daily basis.
    Once a week we have agreed to call each other long distance and read Together what we have written for the entire week. We will begin this Monday, August 24, 2015.
